Are you sustaining passion?

Passion Flower in Bloom

At New Year, what did you imagine you’d do, have, or be six months down the line?Did you commit to exercise and diet so you could change your look or improve your health? Did you start to straighten out your finances, your closets, and your office so you could lead a more organized life?  Did you declare that you’d have a new job, a new car, a new attitude so you could start fresh? Maybe you knew you’d be having a baby, or be getting sworn in as president, or moving to a new house. If so, you left yourself no option. If you had a baby, became president or sold your house, chances are you met your goals.  Good for you. Read More→

Bad Back? Give it your full attention

pd_back_pain2_070530_mnI had a bad back from 1986 to 2006.  You might imagine that I figured out how to live with the pain.  I did.  I just decided that I’d always have to live with pain and that there was nothing I could do about it. For 20 years, that was true.

Now, I am essentially pain free in my lower back.  What did I do?  I finally listened to my body and followed the tried and true remedies for healing a lower back strain.  The fact is that I never gave my back a chance to heal and I never took an active role in getting well.

I am not a doctor or a physical therapist, so I recommend that anyone with a back injury see a doctor or physical therapist and get the instructions and prognosis for the injury.  After that, if you are told to do certain things, DO THEM. Read More→

Stepping, or How to Walk

feetThe first thing that Nia students learn is a heel-lead step.  The body was designed to step heel first.

If you look at the skeleton of the foot, you will see that the structure suggests which part would be most likely to bear a strike and weight, and which part would be suited to providing a greater surface area to help with balance.

Try this: Take some careful steps; one foot after the other.  Just notice how you step.  Then, become super conscious about leading each step with your heel.  Your steps should repeat this: Heel, whole foot, and then push off the ball of the back foot. Right foot: heel, put the rest of your foot down, left heel rises, you push through to the ball of the left foot, and so on.

The second lesson in Nia choreography is the clock.  The easiest way for students to move the same way all together is to have them stand on an imaginary clock face.  Standing feet together, twelve o’clock is straight in front of you and six o’clock is straight behind.  The rest of the numbers on the clock fall where they normally do between twelve and six, no matter where you are in the room.  Read More→
